The eligible German longlist entries are:

    • Afire
    • Anselm
    • Elaha
    • Sisi & I
    • The Teachers’ Lounge
    • The Theory of Everything
    • The Ordinaries
    • Orphea in Love
    • Weekend Rebels
    • What You Can See from Here
    • A Whole Life
    • A Woman

Those in bold I’d deem the most realistic to be nominated. The Teachers’ Lounge beat All Quiet on the Western Front at the German Oscar equivalent Lola for Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Screenplay.

    Monster in ALL categories, including:
    - Best Picture
    - Best Director

I’m 99.5% sure France is gonna pick Anatomy of a Fall as their submission. Japan might pick either Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Monster or Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Evil Does Not Exist. It’ll depend on how well Hamaguchi’s film does in Venice.

Would The Zone of Interest qualify for Poland’s entry, or will the fact it’s a co-production between the US and UK disqualify it?

Anatomycontains French, English and German dialogue; I’d be curious if there’s anyone on these boards who’s seen it who could confirm how much English there is, as if it’s over 50% then the film would be disqualified from contention. Not sure aboutZone, but I assume it could qualify as either the UK or Polish entry. Poland might seem more fitting as the film is set in Auschwitz, although its director is British.

I believe the last movie UK got in the Oscars was “Solomon & Gaenor” in 1999 so that’ll be interesting if they do decide to submit a film this year.

I just love movies. And awards.

I went down this rabbit hole and I found a deadline article after it’s Cannes acquisition by Neon or after it won the Palme, I forget. Anyways, it stated that the distributors were assured that it meets the Oscar rules meaning more than 50% of the dialogue is not in English.

My money is on Afire. The fires on Maui help it’s case. Lol
